A social enterprise that tackles health inequalities in Bradford is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Healthy Lifestyle Solutions CIC was set up in 2001 and acts as an anchor between statutory health services and the community by liaising with local voluntary and faith organisations.

Director Julie Wakefield, who has led the organisation with her sister Sharon Rushworth, said: “After a wonderful 20 years, the HLS team is looking forward to building on our existing projects, really cementing them in the communities. Future plans will see continued innovation, working with partners to provide a sustainable all-around Health and Wellbeing service. The aim is for HLS to be here in another 20 years, continually evolving to stay relevant to the times as we have over the past two decades.”

HLS runs a range of projects and has led the way on “social prescribing” where health professionals refer patients to other organisations out in the community to offer them holistic options to improve their health and wellbeing.

The current flagship project is Restore Recovery College which offers a range of activities to support people’s mental health and wellbeing, such as art, music, craft and yoga, mindfulness, and stress management.

HLS hosts a range of groups, including weekly activities for older isolated people, a men’s group, and weight management and exercise classes and deals with around 650 referrals per year.

The voluntary project is run with partners including My Wellbeing College in Shipley, The Opportunity Centre, MIND, Credit Union, and West Yorkshire Police.

The team is now looking into Covid-safe arrangements to hold a celebration for guests at their new Restore premises at BizSpace Business Park, Bradford.
