MORE than 100 students have been celebrated at a prestigious awards event.

Bradford College's Further Education (FE) Student and Apprenticeship Awards ran for four days last week, from Monday to Thursday.

There were five ceremonies in total, covering a variety of categories, from Maths and English to Brickwork and Healthcare.

There were "Students of the Year", greatest achievements, team players and those who have completed the most enrichment hours.

Vice Principal, Dawn Leak, said students had been "remarkable" in overcoming the challenges of the pandemic.

She added: “There has been so much uncertainty and you have had to tackle different ways of learning and working and have often changed the way you studying to make sure you were able to keep on top of your studies.

"The fact that you have overcome these challenges this year is remarkable and it our pleasure to recognise your successes and achievements at this awards ceremony."

The week of celebrations began in spectacular style on Monday with Construction and Engineering and Professional and Leisure Services.

Mrs Leak opened the ceremony by saying: “It is our pleasure to recognise your successes and achievements at this ceremony.”

Greg O’Shea, Head of Construction and Engineering, who was presenting the awards to students within his department said: “You really do represent the best of Bradford College.”

Kingsley Domfeh (pictured top-left) was presented the Head of Department for Leadership and Peer Support for representing his class as course rep, and always putting the needs of others before his own.

He said: “I have always had a passion for cars since I was five years old.

"I chose to go down the mechanical engineering route because this was where my heart was.”

Mr Domfeh has now succeeded in gaining a two-year apprenticeship with Halfords and has ambitions to open his own garage further into the future, fixing cars as well as motorbikes, and importing vehicles from overseas.

Seven students achieved recognition for their achievements on the Tuesday, as the winners in the Progression to Learning and Work category were announced.

Helen Denning, Curriculum Manager for Progression to Learning and Work, announced the awards and said: “This is one of our highlights of the year and always very emotional for the PLW team.

"It is lovely to see so many familiar faces here today and a number of new ones and we thank you for coming to celebrate the end of the year with us.”

Rejwan Mia was the winner of the Student of the Year for Progression to Learning and Work Entry 1 award.

Mrs Denning said: “He always tries his best in whatever task he is working upon and never gives up.

"He is cheerful every day and enjoys making everyone around him laugh and smile.

"He is also thoughtful, caring and polite to all students, staff and the security team.

"He values college and he, in turn, is valued by all that are lucky enough to share their college days with him. This student is a really worthy winner.”

On Wednesday, Apprentices were celebrated in the lunchtime ceremony, with a special event for Adult and Community students in the evening.

Alex McHale (pictured bottom-left) achieved Apprentice of the Year for Dental and has had to overcome many personal barriers during her studies.

She caught lyme disease from a bite on holiday which hospitalised her and unfortunately caused long-term health issues.

She went back into dental assisting and re-trained to overcome her mobility issues.

Despite all the barriers she gained a distinction at EPA a few weeks ago and her sons Oliver, 10, and Robin, seven, were at the ceremony to see her achieve her award.

The final day was for Health Sciences, Meditech and Technology students, as well as those from Arts, Education and Creative Industries and Early Years and Social Care.

Sidra Iqbal bagged two awards, being presented with Student of the Year for Level 3 Computing, as well as Student of the Year for the Health Science, Meditech and Technology department.

She was described as “an exceptionally bright student who consistently delivers high quality work across all units".

She is "an exceptional student who has excelled in all aspects of her studies over the three years she has been with us."

Ms Iqbal has accepted a place at a local university and has a "very bright future ahead".
