Oliver Pryde, from Flimby, in Cumbria, was pursuing his lifelong dream of studying maths at Huddersfield University.

The 18-year-old was described by Netherhall School in Maryport, which he attended, as 'a superb student' and an 'impeccable young man'

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a number of other offences believed to be in relation to the collision, said a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police.

“It is with the greatest sadness that Netherhall School writes to inform you of the tragic and unexpected death of former sixth form student Oliver Pryde," the school said in a statement to parents.

“Oliver was pursuing his lifelong dream and career ambition, successfully studying mathematics at Huddersfield University.

“Oliver left Netherhall School last summer; he was a superb student, impeccable young man, a joy to be around, loved and respected by all and a great credit to his family, many friends, teachers and fellow students.

“Our deepest sympathies and condolences to all his family and everyone who knew and loved him. He will be forever in our thoughts.”

Hundreds of people paid their condolences on the school’s Facebook page.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the fatal road traffic collision in Huddersfield. The collision occurred at approximately 12.20am on Monday on Penistone Road, Kirkburton.

A Vauxhall Corsa was travelling towards Huddersfield when it collided with Oliver. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Vauxhall failed to stop at the scene and was found a short time later. The two men remain in custody.
