TRIBUTES have been paid to a man named locally as "Wayne", who was hit and killed by a car.

West Yorkshire Police launched a murder investigation yesterday after a 51-year-old man was knocked down and killed by a black Mercedes Class A vehicle on Sunday, on Indus Close, in Heckmondwike, at 11.40pm.

The man, who was named locally today as "Wayne", was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

But he passed away in the early hours of Monday morning.

Flowers and tributes have been left at the scene today.

There were three bouquets of flowers, all with accompanying messages.

One of the tributes said, "RIP big bro" and was left by Julie and Jamie.

Another said, "RIP Uncle Wayne. We will miss you. Lots of love."

The final message said: "Rest easy Wayne. Gone but never forgotten. Love, Toni."

Officers were first called to Indus Close when the Mercedes pulled up and then the people inside were involved in a dispute with the victim and others.

Minutes later "Wayne" was knocked down by the car and seriously injured, before the vehicle drove off from the scene.

Police provided an update on the murder investigation earlier today, after multiple people were arrested yesterday.
