A LOCAL Councillor has condemned a driver who failed to stop for police leading to a bad crash in Manningham this morning as "stupid and reckless".

Councillor Mohammed Amran (Heaton, Labour) was furious about the incident which occurred in the early hours of today.

Three men have been in hospital, one with serious leg injuries, after the BMW they were travelling in failed to stop for police in Heights Lane, Heaton, at 5.12am, and was pursued by police until it was involved in a collision in Heaton Road.

The high-powered grey BMW hit a stone wall outside St Bede's & St Joseph's Catholic College, causing major damage to the vehicle and leaving debris and stones strewn across the residential street.

Cllr Amran said it was lucky no one had been killed in the crash - occupants and pedestrians included - and called for action to tackle dangerous driving in Heaton, an area hit by horror crashes in recent years which have claimed young lives.

He said: "It's unacceptable people are failing to stop for police.

"There are people out walking by the roads even at that time; it's stupid behaviour from the individuals in that car.

"They could have killed or seriously injured someone else or themselves, I'm appalled.

"We need to address these issues of dangerous and reckless driving in Heaton, so I'm very annoyed. I am raising it with the Council to see what we can do to tackle this problem.

"When the police put their sirens on you should stop, failing to is only endangering yourself and others and could cause suffering to their own families and to those of others; their reckless driving affects everyone else.

"These men have lived but we've lost lives in Heaton before from this kind of thing. If police pull you over just stop, it's not worth it."

A man, 34, who was in the car was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries, while two others, aged 21 and 22, were taken in with minor injuries.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the nature of the collision.

The Telegraph & Argus has contacted West Yorkshire Police again to see if any arrests have been made over the incident.
