A KEIGHLEY man has received a suspended jail sentence after admitting driving dangerously on residential roads.

Nathan Webster, 25, was spotted by police on Saturday afternoon, on June 6, 2020, behind the wheel of a VW Golf on North Dean Road, before speeding up and pulling straight onto another street, causing three other vehicles to need to brake quickly.

He reached speeds of double the limit, eventually pulling over and running off before being arrested nearby.

He told police he had recently lost three family members in quick succession and had panicked when the police tried to get him to pull over.

Bradford Crown Court was told that Webster, of Grant Street, Keighley, had a number of previous convictions and had been jailed in 2014 for a third strike burglary. But since then he had turned his life around.

He pleaded guilty and received a nine month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, must carry out work for the community, and was disqualified from driving.

Webster's barrister told the court his grandfather had passed away, his step-father had died from Covid-19 and his cousin had died by suicide - all within a matter of weeks of each other.

The father-of-one had been in a difficult mental state at the time and on the way to visit another family member who was struggling also.

The Recorder of Bradford, Richard Mansell QC, said the chance of him hitting another driver or pedestrian had been high.

But he praised Webster for turning his life around.
