A PUB manager has hit out at the “disgraceful behaviour” of yobs who piled into her premises and wreaked havoc after the England game at the weekend.

Pubs across the country broadcast England's all-important Euro 2020 Quarter-Final tie against Ukraine on Saturday evening, as fans eagerly anticipated further answers to the eternal question - is it coming home?

A comprehensive 4-0 victory certainly helped generate optimism and also sparked wild celebrations at outdoor and indoor venues.

But "it all went so wrong" at The Red Lion Hotel pub, in Kirkgate, Silsden, according to assistant bar manager, Claire Anderson, who eventually managed to take back control after chaos erupted.

Ms Anderson, who has worked at the pub since 2018 before taking up her current managerial role, explained there were about 20 people inside the premises, all enjoying the game "nice and quietly".

She said: "We were all so happy… then it all went so wrong."

The assistant bar manager claims a few people "from all over" first began coming into the pub, before more and more started to "pile in".

The door was locked, but Ms Anderson was still noticing new faces in and around the pub.

She said it turned out people were jumping the fence to get in, damaging planters in the process.

They were on top of tables chanting, refusing to sit down and purposely smashing glasses, according to the assistant bar manager.

Ms Anderson said: "Plants were pulled out, glasses smashed, the gates were kicked in, and people actually mounted the gates.

"It was such a shame it turned out like that after England had won - it should have been a great celebration."

The assistant bar manager made the decision to open the gates and ushered people out, who had "spoiled it for everyone".

She also closed the bar until order was resumed inside and everyone was seated.

The following day (Sunday), Ms Anderson posted about the ruckus on Facebook, expressing her anger at the situation and general lack of respect.

She said: "I spent most of the night out from behind the bar.

"I’ve barred a fair few people since we reopened and don’t have a problem barring more.

"Not one apology from anyone this morning, you should all be ashamed of yourselves, disgraceful behaviour.

"It didn’t take long for me to take back control, but if the door is locked, it is a clear sign we are closed.

"Fuming, if you want to try me then go ahead, but I definitely aren't playing.

"Thanks to my amazing staff (two of who weren't even meant to be working), I appreciate your help so much."

More than 40 commenters responded to the post, giving their support for Ms Anderson and the pub.

Many criticised the yobs who had piled into the pub and caused chaos, while others congratulated Ms Anderson and her staff for the way they dealt with the ordeal.

The experience of Saturday could cause concern that similar scenes might occur on Wednesday evening, when England face Denmark at Wembley in the Semi-Finals - only the second time the Three Lions have reached that stage of a European Championships.

So, will The Red Lion be showing the game, when manager Gareth Southgate walks out for his second major tournament semi-final in just three years?

Yes, is the answer and Ms Anderson is adamant the chaos of Saturday will not be repeated if they have anything to do with it.

She said: "I will be on the door myself for the semi-final, so won’t be letting any of the reoffenders in."

The T&A has contacted West Yorkshire Police for a comment, but has received no response.
