A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has raised over £2,000 for charity by walking a combined 60 miles in a month with his pet dog.

Shipley’s Freddie Bairstow participated in Cancer Research UK’s ‘Walk 60 miles with your dog in June’ challenge.

The task was in memory of his grandad Graham Bairstow who sadly lost his life to the terrible disease in January.

Accompanying the Saltaire Primary School pupil along the way has been long-friend and family dog Brian.

Graham used to take the Staffordshire Bull Terrier for walks, so Freddie thought it was only right that Brian helped him raise as much as he could for the brilliant cause.

And they have done an amazing job, generating £2,069, at time of writing, after finishing the huge amount of mileage on Wednesday.

Shoutouts must also go to Freddie’s one-year-old brother Felix and his other family and friends who replaced Brian on certain days when it was too hot.

Mum Danielle Parker is super proud of her son’s achievement and speaks about how the idea came about.

“I came across it on Facebook,” she said.

“He lost his grandad in January to cancer, so I asked him if he fancied doing something for his memory.

“He thought 60 miles was a lot at first but he really got into it.

“He initially set out for his target to be £5 but we told him to try a little higher, maybe £100. He has had a huge amount of support.

“We had a few days off. He has done a mix of two, three, four mile walks to make sure he doesn’t fall behind.

“The school he goes to mentioned him in an assembly at the beginning of June and they have asked us to update them with how he is getting on.

“I left the target at £1,000 and it has just carried on going.

“There is a lot of people on there that I don’t know so I think people have shared it.

“It seems to have touched everyone. A lot of Graham’s friends have donated as well.”
