THE weather has taken a turn for the worst - but can we expect a heatwave later this month?

The Met Office has poured cold water on hopes of a record-breaking spell of warm weather but held out hope of a return to summer in the final two weeks of July.

The weekend will see longer periods of rain, particularly tomorrow, and the showers are expected to carry on into next week.

However, the Met Office says “fine and dry weather for much of the UK is most likely for the rest of July”.

“Temperatures are likely to be above average for much of this period, with an increased risk of some very warm or hot spells occurring,” the Met Office added.
