A LIDL store in the district which has been closed since January is to re-open later this month.

The Shelf supermarket, on Carr House Road, was forced to close so "essential maintenance" could be carried out.

A post from its management team on Facebook said it would be "shut for the foreseeable future due to some required structural work" and it was estimated to be around eight weeks.

Then, in an update in April, a Lidl spokesperson said modernisation works were underway.

They said: "We can confirm our store on Carr House Road, Shelf is due to reopen this summer following modernisation works to deliver even more of our high quality and affordable produce to the local community.

"The works will include the delivery of state-of-the-art facilities to improve the overall efficiency of the store, including new heating and insulation as well as larger and more efficient refrigeration units.

"The modernisation will ensure the ability to continue to grow our offering for customers, especially within our fruit and vegetable range and will also allow us to introduce new and exciting products for the local community. The overall customer experience will also be enhanced through an updated car park and signage throughout the store."

In an update today, Lidl confirmed the store will re-open on July 15 at 8am.

The store opening times will be 8am-10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am–4pm on Sunday.

Nick Harvey, Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, said: “We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding whilst we have carried out these improvement works at our store in Shelf.

"We are delighted to be able to open the store again to residents and deliver an enhanced range of our fresh, high quality and affordable produce as well as an even greater shopping experience.”

The supermarket said the work "forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion and regeneration plans across Great Britain" and "the store has seen an overall modernisation with updated interiors and full redecoration".

A spokesperson said Covid measures will be in place, like face coverings and a range of social distancing measures.

"Other measures that continue to be in place include dedicated cleaning stations at entrances, hand sanitiser, disinfectant spray and wipes for customers to use on their trolleys and baskets, protective screens at checkouts, as well as visors and face coverings are available for colleagues to wear," they added.

"In addition, customers are encouraged to pay by contactless payment where possible."
