POLICE have released an image of a man they want to speak to in relation to violence yesterday against canvassers in the Batley and Spen by-election.

Police want to speak to anyone who can identify the man, as the investigation into yesterday's incident remains ongoing.

Eggs were thrown at men canvassing for Labour in Whitaker Street, Batley, at about 4.30pm on Sunday, and another man was punched and kicked, suffering minor injuries.

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin - who's resignation triggered the by-election - was campaigning with the group and said one man was being kicked on the floor during the disorder.

Three men are believed to have been involved in the incident and all were described as being Asian and wearing hooded tops.

Officers have recorded four offences of assault in relation to the attack.

Detective Inspector Jeanette Yates, of Kirklees CID, said:  “Detectives are carrying out a number of enquiries into this attack and we are issuing a picture of a man we want to identify and speak with in connection with what took place.

“We are also seeking to identify two other men in connection with the assaults and I would appeal to anyone who can assist our enquiries to contact Kirklees District CID on 101 referencing crime number 13210322000.

“Information can also be given online at the West Yorkshire Police website or anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on  0800 555 111.”
