PLANS have now been submitted for the former Crosslee tumble dryer site in Hipperholme in what would be a £60m investment.

A masterplan for the site, which was revealed in April, includes 106 homes, a care home and retirement village, employment and commercial space and a supermarket.

Applicant Crosslee said the majority of responses during a public consultation were positive about bringing the large site back into use and the mixed-use proposal.

A spokesman for Crosslee said submitting the plans was a "major landmark" to bring this important site back into use.

“Our vision is to create a vibrant new community that represents a massive investment of over £60 million into the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe area, as well as providing modern employment space for local businesses to thrive.”

Five acres of the site will be dedicated to creating employment space in units ranging in size from 500 sq m to 1,900 sq m, suitable for small and medium sized businesses. These premises will be ideal for start-ups and growing local businesses.

The care home and McCarthy and Stone retirement village together with the supermarket, will result in the creation of 120 to 150 jobs on the site and will include bungalows and apartments. It is envisaged that the employment and industrial units will also create additional employment for local residents.

The factory itself operated for more than 45 years, producing household appliances, including White Knight tumble dryers

Competition from the Far East and Eastern Europe left production unviable there, and the factory ceased production in January 2020.

Demolition work began last year and the old factory buildings are now full demolished.
