BRADFORD is the 10th most ambitious city in the country and second in Yorkshire, a new study has shown.

Research by card machine provider, Dojo, has revealed the city's 532,000 inhabitants are some of the most entrepreneurial and business savvy in the UK.

The analysis involved using five key factors to create a nationwide index of the most business ambitious cities.

This includes: percentage business growth comparing new and closed businesses, business growth over the last five years, business five-year survival rate, number of businesses with more than 10 employees and online searches of how to start a business.

Bradford came out with a score of 161 (out of 250), placing the city in the top 10.

The most ambitious city in Yorkshire was Leeds, which placed third with a score 172, while York finished just behind Bradford on 161 in 11th.

The study found that people in Bradford made more than 670 Google searches for "how to start a new business" over the past 12 months.

Bradford already has more than 1,815 businesses registered with at least 10 employees, with the city showing 29.85 per cent business growth in 2019.

Its five-year business survival rate is also attractive at 42.30 per cent.

Bradford Chamber of Commerce President, Suzanne Watson, said: “Bradford has a long and successful history as a great entrepreneurial city, from textile entrepreneur Sir Titus Salt to car manufacturers the Jowett brothers, and this study demonstrates that this vision and culture remains the case.

"Bradford’s people have long shown themselves to be industrious, have an eye for an opportunity and to be adaptable in the face of change or upheaval.

"So these figures come as no surprise to us, but they do underline one of Bradford’s many strengths, while also showing how and why the city must continue to play a full and leading part in the regional post-Covid recovery that is needed.

"That recovery will be led by business and backed by the local authority and the district’s many stakeholders.”

Dojo also conducted a separate study using similar markers to give a business ambition index for city's across the world.

This research also included analysing, the cost of a business start up as a percentage of GNI (Gross National Income) per capita, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and the percent of the population with access to education.

The maximum rating possible was 500 and many of these cities came out with "ambition scores" into the 400 and 300 marks.

London topped the list with 481, followed by Sydney (402) in Australia and Cape Town (384) in South Africa.

Five global cities achieved a lower score than Bradford's, including Kabul (141) in Afghanistan, Algiers (134) in Algeria, Addis Ababa (132) in Ethiopia, Baghdad (114) in Iraq and Kinshasa (95) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
