YOUNG people are being invited to take part in a theatre project focusing upon the communities who settled in Bradford’s Newby Square.

A call-out has been made for 12 to 18-year-olds from Bradford or with a link to Bradford, and in particular for anyone who has a connection to the African-Caribbean community or Newby Square.

“We would like to hear from people who may have had a relative who lived in Newby Square or from people who want to learn more about it. It will be a children-led project.”

Built in 1968 to replace a clearance area off Manchester Road, Newby Square estate was outwardly bleak but its inhabitants - many of which were of African-Caribbean heritage - belonged to a close-knit, vibrant community.

After becoming plagued by vandalism in later years, the square was demolished in 1987.

The devised theatre project - to be coordinated by Theatre in Flow - is funded and supported by Bradford 2025 and The Leap and Roots Foundation Movement.

Rehearsals will take place on Thursdays and Saturdays between now and August 21, for when the performance is scheduled. It is free to join.

It will be performed at a venue in Bradford.

Sinead Campbell, of Theatre in Flow, said: “We are working with young people and have a choreographer and a DJ doing sounds. It offers young people the chance to learn new skills. There are so many fun routes we can go.”

“If anyone does not want to perform there are other roles such as lighting and sound.”
