FORMER Bradford City goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin could only watch on as an error from one of his fellow goalkeepers in the Scotland squad saw Steve Clarke's side slump to a 2-0 defeat against the Czech Republic yesterday afternoon at Hampden Park.

McLaughlin, who has travelled expecting to be third-choice behind Craig Gordon and David Marshall, saw the latter beaten from 50 yards out by a stunning second-half effort from Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick.

Marshall was well off his line when the shot was taken, and his scrambling attempt to get back to make a save proved futile.

Schick had already put the Czechs 1-0 up just before the break, with a neat guided header into the bottom corner from Vladimir Coufal's cross.

The defeat leaves Scotland rooted to the foot of the Group D table after the opening round of fixtures, which saw group rivals England defeat Croatia 1-0 on Sunday.

McLaughlin and his team-mates visit Wembley on Friday night to face Gareth Southgate's side, in what has already become a must not lose clash for Scotland.

The 33-year-old, who was born in Edinburgh, spent six years at City, his longest spell at any one club.

He came on as a substitute in the 2013 League Cup final, and was between the sticks for the League Two play-off final win over Northampton a few months later.

McLaughlin played every league game for City in the 2013-14 season, but left that summer after failing to agree a new deal with the club.
