A MAN who was found dead near the Spen Valley Greenway took his own life, a coroner ruled.

The body of Polish man Adrian Piotr Kopec, 35, was found near the popular walking and cycling route in Cleckheaton on the morning of New Year’s Day this year.

The inquest, held virtually at Bradford Coroners’ Court, heard Mr Kopec, who came to the UK in 2018 and worked at Kober, close to the M606, was over the drink-drive limit for alcohol and had also used cocaine before he died.

His mother, Anna Kopec, told the inquest in a statement that nothing pointed to her son being suicidal.

However, his partner, Izabela Kuzminska, who had been in a relationship with Mr Kopec for around three-and-a-half years from when they met in Radom, Poland, said he’d had suicidal thoughts, but had re-assured her he was feeling better.

After returning home in the early hours, she went to bed, while Mr Kopec went to his mother’s house until around 4am.

He borrowed £140 and said he was seeing workmates in Bradford.

Mr Kopec’s body was found at around 9am that morning. DC Amanda Miskell said calls between 5.08am and 5.24am were linked to two males who supply cocaine in and around the Wyke area.

There were no suspicious circumstances or signs of third-party involvement in Mr Kopec’s death, DC Miskell told the inquest.

Assistant coroner Crispin Oliver said he had “taken deliberate steps to end his own life” and ruled his death as a suicide.
