A POPULAR and multi-award winning real ale pub near Bradford city centre is being put up for sale.

Freehold offers in the region of £250,000 are being taken for the Fighting Cock, on Preston Street, a busy real ale pub close to the city centre.

Although it is up for sale, the pub's manager has said "it will carry on as a pub" and a Bradford CAMRA spokesman said "there is no real cause for concern".

"It will carry on as a pub," said manager Sue Turner, who has run the Fighting Cock for the last 25 years. "That's what I believe."

"This issue came up a few months ago and the building has had a for sale sign for over a year," said Peter Down, acting chairman of Bradford CAMRA.

"They are back trading again, so fingers crossed all is well.

"It's not unusual for a pub to have a for sale sign on it.

"There's no real cause for concern, not at the moment until something starts progressing."

In marketing the pub, commercial estate agent Everard Cole has highlighted the Fighting Cock as a rustic real ale pub with a strong following from loyal customers, which is close to the city centre and has a beer garden.

The property, which is located in a mixed commercial and residential area on the corner of Preston Street and Handel Street is around half a mile (or 20 minutes walk) west of Bradford city centre.

The two-storey public house is being marketed by Everard Cole as "drinkers' paradise" and the multi-award winning pub usually offers 12 real ales together with a number of ciders and stouts.

Bradford CAMRA member Josie Boothroyd said: "It has had a nice selection of real ales for years."

Mr Down said that last year the Fighting Cock received an award for featuring for 30 years in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

He also said that about three years ago it received Bradford CAMRA's Cider Pub of the Year, as it is only one of a handful of pubs to offer hand-pulled cider.

The ground floor comprises an open plan public bar and has a rustic wooden floor mix and match wooden top tables, fixed seating and a selection of low and high stools.

There is a basement beer cellar and additional storage rooms. The first floor has storage rooms, kitchen and an office.

Opposite the property is a self-contained beer garden that is held by way of a 10-year lease from October 2019 at a rental of £1,500 PA.

Everard Cole say if the premises are to be sold as an investment, the proposed tenant will be Inspired Leisure & Entertainment Limited.
