FOUR parents have been fined hundreds of pounds each for failing to ensure their children attended school regularly in Bradford.

The quartet – all of whom cannot be named for legal reasons to protect the identities of their children – appeared at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on May 19 on charges brought by Bradford Council.

In each case it was proven that the defendants – three mothers and one father – were parents of a child of compulsory school age registered at a school who failed to attend regularly.

The first, a mother from the south of Bradford, failed to ensure her ten-year-old and six-year-old for more than a month last October and November.

She was fined £770 and ordered to pay costs of £150 and a victim surcharge of £77, for a total penalty just shy of £1,000.

The second, also a mother and from the east of the city, was proven to have failed to ensure her 16-year-old daughter was attending school for almost two months between September and November.

The mother was fined £440 and ordered to pay costs of £150 and a victim surcharge of £44, for a total penalty of £634.

The sole father in court, who was also from the south of the city, failed to ensure his 10-year-old daughter was at school for just over a month last September and October.

He was fined £660 and ordered to pay costs of £150 and a victim surcharge of £66, for a total penalty of £876.

The final mother, from Keighley, was found to have failed to ensure her 15-year-old daughter attended school for more than a month between September and November last year.

She was fined £660 and ordered to pay costs of £150 and a victim surcharge of £66 for a total penalty of £876.
