A Yorkshire-bound express train had to be cancelled after a collision with cows that had got onto the track.

The incident has caused disruption to services on the East Coast Main Line today.

David Horne, managing director of LNER, tweeted a picture of the damaged Azuma class 800 train.

Mr Horne said: "Sincere apologies to our customers delayed on the 0526 Stirling-London King’s Cross.

"This picture shows the damage to the front of the train caused by cows on the line.

"Thank you for your patience, sincere apologies."

The train, which was heading for York, Doncaster and then on to London, is thought to have got into problems around the Durham area.
