SIR - It has been recommended that the newly created position of Yorkshire Mayor should attract an annual salary of £105k. The newly elected mayor, Tracy Brabin, has expressed her pride in her working class roots and no doubt as a committed socialist would frown upon obscene pay levels and instead favour more modest rewards.

Therefore within this context it may be expected that Mrs Brabin would decline such an excessive pay award and instead accept a more justifiable one of about £30k per annum.

Yet it seems doubtful that today's politicians would be capable of such magnanimous gestures and self- sacrifice as they tend to claim all their perceived entitlements.
