LNER says passengers who had tickets to travel today will be able to use them at any time up until Sunday May 16.

But it says passengers must make a reservation before travelling – and should travel ‘as close to the time on your ticket as possible’.

In a travel alert released this morning the company said: “We are experiencing significant disruption to our train services due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time.

“Because of this, we're advising customers not to travel today. Your tickets dated for travel today, Saturday May 8, will be valid for travel up to and including, Sunday May 16.

“If you choose to travel between Sunday May 9 and Sunday May 16, please travel as close to the time on your ticket as possible. Please note that you must make a reservation before travelling.

“We’re doing everything we can to get services up and running again and we're sorry for any disruption to your journey today.”
