FILMING is to begin next week on a sequel to the much-loved children's film The Railway Children, with Jenny Agutter, Sheridan Smith and Tom Courtenay all set to star.

It is just over 50 years since the original film hit the box office and cameras are set to roll once again in the Worth Valley.

The Railway Children Return will see key locations from the original film once again on the big screen, with Keighley & Worth Valley Railway having a starring role once more.

Inspired by the original 1970s film, other notable locations will include Oakworth Station, Haworth and The Bronte Parsonage.

Shooting will begin on location in the UK on May 10, and the final film is set for release in April 2022.

A host of BAFTA winning actors will star in the sequel, with Jenny Agutter resuming her role from the original film, while Sheridan Smith and Tom Courtenay will also star alongside a new generation of Railway Children.

The Railway Children Return will be directed by Morgan Matthews, is written by Danny Brocklehurst, and is being produced by Jemma Rodgers - all BAFTA winners - for STUDIOCANAL.

It is described as: "Inspired by one of the most beloved British family films of all time, The Railway Children Return is an enchanting adventure for a new generation bringing a contemporary sensibility to a classic story and combining British cast with stunning locations.

"The Railway Children Return will take audiences on an exciting and heart-warming journey, in which a group of children are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during World War 2, where they encounter a young soldier, who like them, is far away from home…"

In addition a fully restored Blu-ray and DVD release of The Railway Children is available, including a retrospective documentary and interviews with key cast Jenny Agutter, Bernard Cribbins and Sally Thomsett.

Last year Jenny Agutter joined in a £250,000 appeal to save the iconic railway line that featured in the film.

She stepped in as the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway revealed it had raised £135,000 after launching its Worth Saving appeal in May 2020.

The appeal was launched after the Covid-19 crisis forced closure just before the spring and summer season of train rides that bring in most of the line’s income.

Jenny Agutter, who starred as Bobby in the much-loved 1970 film, encouraged people to donate to the appeal, as celebrations for the 50th anniversary of The Railway Children film had to be postponed.

She said: “I have many fond memories of working at Haworth and Oakworth and along that wonderful railway line.

“Like many others I find that steam trains hold a fascination for me.
“Since the filming I have returned for visits and love seeing the beautifully restored and cared for engines and travelling in the old carriages."

She added: “Fifty years on I am waving my red flannel petticoat (metaphorically) hoping it will make people aware of the need to give support now, so we can look forward to returning to the Worth Valley Railway in the years to come.”
