CREATIVE sensation Kiera Heckman did Craven College proud to take home this award.

The second year level 3 Art and Design student has been able to make a ton of interesting and visually appealing garments throughout the last couple of years.

The pair of trousers on the left in the picture, right, is from her last project, ‘What Lies Beneath’.

Her theme was hidden layers and things that we don’t think about every day.

An example of this is how the English language is made up of Greek, Latin and French.

Kiera highlighted this by making a code, printed on to a fabric, which you can only see through certain angles in the layers.

On the right is another piece of clothing she created for her last final major project last year.

“I did not expect it at all,” Kiera said upon accepting the award.

“I was just thrilled to be nominated amongst these wonderful people. It is just really surprising.

“The college have been amazing throughout.

“They have just been really supportive and encourage us to grow as much as we can as students. It is the best college.”

Kiera also excels in fashion film and photography, and is great at gaining excellent research for all of her projects.

Discussing the barriers in this last year, she added: “It hasn’t been great not going in because of the restrictions. It is an art course so you kind of have to be there for it.

“College have just been great sending us as much as they can to do it at home.

And on the future: “At the end of this year, I hope to go to university.

“I will be specialising in textiles at uni. I just want to do something creative in the future, that is the goal.”

Bradford College duo Baklcha Ahmed and Klea Kurmekaj were the other nominees in this category this year.
