A MAN made his first appearance in court this afternoon charged with the murder of Mujahid Hussain in Duckworth Lane last week.

Hashim Sajjad, 19, of Wheatlands Crescent, Daisy Hill, appeared in the dock behind glass screens at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court earlier today.

Dressed in a grey jumper and bottoms and a blue face covering, Sajjad spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

It is alleged that the teenager, whose family were present in the courtroom murdered 19-year-old Muhammed Mujahid Hussain late on Thursday, April 22, following large scale disorder in Duckworth Lane.

Mujahid Hussain turned up at Bradford Royal Infirmary with a single knife wound shortly after midnight last Friday, and died from his injuries a short time later.

There was a large police presence on Duckworth Lane last Friday as the investigation into the death of Mr Hussain - known as Muj to his friends and family - got underway.

There has been an outpouring of tributes and condolences following his death.

A large selection of floral tributes were left at the scene and dozens of messages left in a book of condolence.

His family have also started a fundraising campaign in his honour to build a mosque, water pumps and wells in The Gambia, which has raised thousands of pounds in a matter of days. Aliza Naz, Mr Hussain’s cousin, thanked those who donated.

She said: “Mujahid was 19 years old. He had his whole life ahead of him. Everyone called him Muj out of love.

“He was a loving and caring person, always there for everyone. He could never say no and now that’s what a lot of people remember him for.”

Detective Superintendent Mark Swift, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, has spoken previously of the shock the incident has caused within the community.

Speaking on Tuesday, Detective Superintendent Mark Swift said: “We know that Mujahid Hussain’s death has caused shockwaves in the local community, particularly given that it has happened during Ramadan.

“A man has now been charged with his murder and a number of others remain in custody as we continue to investigate the circumstances that have led to this young man losing his life.

“There will continue to be a high visibility police presence in the area in the coming days and we will also continue to work with the local community to provide updates and reassurance.”

Sajjad, who was remanded into custody and is next due at Bradford Crown Court on Friday, also appeared on a separate charge of Section 18 wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Three youths, one aged 16 and two aged 17, also appeared on the Section 18 wounding charge, with the four defendants accused of carrying out a violent attack on a 17-year-old in Lower Westfield Road, Manningham, on Thursday, April 8.

All three, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were remanded into secure accommodation by District Judge Richard Clews to appear at Bradford Crown Court on Friday.
