WORK is under way on the re-development of a market in Bradford city centre.

Access through Piccadilly to vehicles was closed yesterday as part of the work on Darley Street market.

The £23 million project will see the former Marks & Spencer building demolished to make way for a multi-storey market and outdoor public square.

The market will open in summer 2023 and the Oastler Market and Kirkgate markets will close, with the Oastler building demolished to be replaced by a housing development.

Demolition on the current building on Darley Street will end in December.

Work was originally meant to start last Spring, but was delayed by the pandemic.

While the work is taking place, the footpath at Piccadilly will remain open to pedestrian and the one-way system on Dale Street has been reversed to offer an alternative route for vehicles.

A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “Access through Piccadilly was closed yesterday as part of the work to develop the new Darley Street Market.

“This transformational project which includes a new public square will redefine Bradford city centre and showcase the fantastic Victorian buildings on Piccadilly by making them a lot more visible.

“The footpath remains open for pedestrians and the direction of the one-way system on Dale Street has been reversed to provide an alternative route for vehicles.

“We have consulted with the local businesses and signage communicating this has been up for several weeks.

“Access for construction vehicles and some businesses will be set up this week.”
