A TEACHER attended A&E after being injured when ceiling tiles came crashing down inside a Bradford school.

Bosses of Fearnville Primary School, in Laisterdyke, said urgent work to fix a school's "defective" metal roof appeared to have "loosened" some of the internal tiles, leading to the serious incident.

The Health and Safety Executive is aware of the incident and has been making initial enquiries.

Most year groups at the school have now been closed for the rest of the week.

No children were injured as the incident occurred after school hours on Monday.

Refurbishment work to the metal roof of the building on Fearnville Drive has been ongoing this month due to "health and safety issues."

The member of staff is now recovering from home.

Years 1 to 6 will be home learning until next week as the repairs get underway.

Wahid Zaman, CEO of the Nurture Academies Trust, which the school is part of, said: “Fearnville Primary School was successful in securing a grant from the DfE’s Condition Improvement Fund to complete the urgent refurbishment of the defective/dilapidated metal roof which was causing significant health and safety issues.

“The work appears to have loosened some of the internal suspended ceiling tiles which fell and hurt one of the teachers.

“This teacher sought treatment from A&E and is currently recuperating at home. We wish her a speedy recovery.

“The incident happened after the end of the school day when there were no children on site, and therefore no children were injured.

“We closed the school to liaise further on the risk assessment and safety measures with the contractor and have sought advice from Bradford Council’s Occupational Health & Safety team.

“Remedial action is already underway.

“We anticipate school will remain closed for children in years 1 to 6 for the remainder of this week, with remote learning in place for all of these classes.

“School will remain open for children in nursery and reception.”

Yesterday morning, the ‘school closures’ section of Bradford Council’s website said: “Partial closure for Year 1 to Year 6 because of issues with ceiling due to building work.”

Bradford Moor Cllr Mohammed Shafiq said: “I am really sorry to hear about the accident with the roof at Fearnville Primary School.

“The school is having an emergency meeting with the construction company to see how this accident has happened.

“There were no injuries to children in the school.

“However, there was a member of staff who suffered some injuries, and she is making her recovery at home.

“As a ward councillor, I will be asking what led to this accident and make sure the safeguarding measures are in place.

“The chief executive of the school has said he will do all he can to safeguard the children, staff and anybody else.”

Cllr Zafar Iqbal added: “We are assured that the school is taking all necessary measures to make the biking safe.

“As ward Cllr we will work with the school and its parents to resume all necessary classes quickly and safely.”

One furious parent added: “My child goes there, and I live in the flats across the school.

“The builders have been working on the roof since my child went back to school on April 12.

“There is scaffolding all around the school.

Another parent added on Facebook: “I know I got a text at 8.47pm yesterday.

“(It said) nursery and reception are still open, and building works are taking place."

“All the time through lockdown and then the holidays and they do it now.”
