SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is planning on creating an "urban fulfilment centre" at its Valley Road store.

The grand sounding name is what the retailer has branded its plans to create new facilities to cater for online food orders.

A planning application to create a facility with parking spaces for 29 "Dot Com vans" in the parking area at the Bradford store has been submitted to Bradford Council.

It would lead to the loss of 44 car parking spaces at the huge site.

Last year Tesco announced plans to roll out urban fulfilment centres at many of its larger stores - with 10 planned for a 2021 opening.

A store in West Bromwich was the first "fulfilment centre" to open.

The rollout of these facilities would coincide with the huge rise in online orders the retail giant has seen during the Covid 19 pandemic.

When asked for more details about plans for the Bradford centre, a spokesman for Tesco said: "We are excited to be bringing Urban Fulfilment Centres to several stores across the UK.

"These planning applications are part of our initial exploration of potential sites. We look forward to updating the local community once plans are confirmed.”
