LATEST NEWS:

A BRADFORD MP has spoken out about a stabbing and disorder and said it is "against the very foundations" of Ramadan.

Naz Shah MP for Bradford West released a statement yesterday responding to the death of a 19-year-old man who was stabbed on Thursday night, in Duckworth Lane.

A fight had broken out in the street at 11.58pm and the victim suffered a single stab wound.

He attended Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), but sadly died from his injury.

Ms Shah said: "As a mother of two young sons, I can only imagine the pain and the shock the parents of this young man will be in, at this moment in time.

"I have seen some footage being shared across social media networks that shows young men smashing up cars and baseball bats.

"Ultimately, there has been a disorder and somebody has died.

"For me and many others across this city who are observing the holy month of Ramadan, recognise this as a month of mercy, reflection and compassion.

"A month of giving charity, sharing kindness with families and supporting all those around us.

"What took place last night was against the very foundations and tenets of faith and this holy month.

"For the many others who may not be observing this holy month, but have faced over a year of difficulties with the Covid-19 pandemic, many who have lost jobs, as well as loved ones, the scenes from last night will also be equally shocking and horrifying.

"After over a year of the pandemic, no one in this city wants to see such senseless and lawlessness on the streets of Bradford."

"That's why we must do all that we can to make sure these individuals do not get away with it."

West Yorkshire Police launched a murder investigation following the death of the 19-year-old.

They arrested two males - aged 17 and 20 - on suspicion of violent disorder, on Friday.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and any information related to the disorder at Duckworth Lane.

Ms Shah thanked the emergency services for all the work they have done so far and she has appealed to the community to help police with their investigation.

She has urged anyone with dashcam footage, or any information, to get in touch with the force.

Anyone who can help is asked to contact the police by calling 101, or using the contact options on the West Yorkshire Police website.

Ms Shah said: "The start of this pandemic showed the best of Bradford, people supporting the vulnerable, caring for the needy and this city coming together in a time of need.

"We cannot allow the actions of a few mindless individuals, which spiralled out of control, to tarnish our city."
