FIRE crews were hard at work overnight tackling a major building fire in Gomersal.

Firefighters were called to Spen Station Yard in Spen Lane at 2.07am where they found a single story building around 20 metres by 10 metres, that was fully engulfed in flames.

Four engines and one aerial appliance were at the scene, with firefighters from Cleckheaton, Odsal, Rastrick, Morley and Halifax using three large jets and two breathing apparatus to fight the flames.

The crews battled hard against the flames for more than two hours, and West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said by 4.45am the fire had been extinguished and only two crews remained at the scene damping down, using one hose reel and a positive pressure ventilation fan to assist with clearing smoke cause by the fire.

Cleckheaton fire station Watch Commander Martin Bleasdale said: "The cause of the fire is believes to be an electrical fault in a piece of manufacturing equipment.

"The premises - which is an engineering workshop - was secure at the time and no one was inside the property."

Mr Bleasdale said it took four hours in total to extinguish the fire and the job was done by 6am.
