LARGE crowds gathered outside Elland Road in Leeds tonight to protest against a proposed European Super League.

There were angry scenes before Premier League side, Leeds United, faced Liverpool at home tonight, with kick-off at 8pm.

The visitors, who led 1-0 at half-time but conceded a late equaliser, are one of six clubs in the top flight of the English league who have signed up to the controversial breakout competition, which would rival the Champions League and be known as the European Super League.

Fans of both Liverpool and Leeds could be seen taking part in the demo, and there were cheers when a Liverpool replica shirt was set alight.

As the Liverpool team bus arrived, there were angry shouts of 'scum' and chants of 'You greedy b*****ds, you know what you are.'

Meanwhile, one protester with a musical instrument played some notes that would accompany the words 'money, money, money, in a rich man's world.'

Meanwhile, some critics took to social media to point out the lack of social distancing during the protest, with one observer asking: 'Do they want us back in a local lockdown?'

Along with Liverpool, the other sides involved in the breakaway are, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham.

The bombshell plan, announced on Sunday, has sparked huge controversy in the footballing world with many calling for the six clubs to be expelled from the Premier League and never allowed to return.

FIFA, UEFA and other governing bodies have also touted the idea of banning any player competing in the proposed European Super League from representing their country at international tournaments like the Euros and the World Cup.

The Leeds United Supporters' Trust (LUST) called on fans earlier today to head to Elland Road before tonight's game to protest against the plans.

Hundreds have turned up, with pictures and videos on social media showcasing fans with banners condemning the move, while others have been heard chanting, "f*ck off to the Super League".

LUST itself paid for a banner, with a poignant message from much-loved head coach, Marcelo Bielsa, who is well known for his purist view of the game.

It reads: "One of the reasons football is the most popular sport in the world, is because the weak can beat the powerful."

The trust also arranged for a plane to fly above the city of Leeds with a message of defiance against the European Super League.

Graham Hyde, 46, vice-chair of the Trust said the fans "won't stand for this".

He added: “I think it comes down to what we’re seeing.

"It's a grab to move football away from fans, and make it purely about business.

“It happened in 1992, but this is about keeping fans at the heart of football.

“If we don’t stand up now, before something actually happens, we won’t be able to change it.

“We stand here with Liverpool fans united in making our point.

“Football is a community sport.

"Working class areas of cities, where people spent all of their money to watch their clubs.

“Billionaires have come in to use the clubs as their toys. It’s awful.

“Stop the greed, stop it now.

“Football is about communities. They just want to make money.

“They want a global sterilised game.

“I think if we allow this to happen it could destroy football, certainly at the bottom end of the deeper leagues. They will not survive.”

One video shows the Liverpool squad boarding their team bus from the hotel this evening, accompanied by a man playing "Money, Money, Money" by ABBA on a trombone.

Liverpool fans are also at the ground voicing their opinions, highlighting this is a case of supporters united against a terrible machine.

It's not just at Elland Road though that people are protesting.

There are several banners hanging outside Manchester City's Etihad Stadium this evening too.
