Primark in Bradford's Kirkgate Shopping Centre stopped admitting customers into the store this afternoon due to an "extremely busy day".

Entry into the shop was stopped to protect staff and customers after customers swarmed to the clothing retailer on the first weekend since non-essential retail could reopen following the recent relaxing of lockdown rules.

It follows scenes on Monday and Tuesday where huge queues formed as people lined up to get into Primark and get their hands on cheap clothes to update their wardrobes.

In a post on Facebook, Kirkgate said: "Primark has been extremely busy today and are currently at full capacity.

"The decision has been made to stop entry into the store from immediate effect. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause to our shoppers.

"This decision has been made to safeguard both staff and customers. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to welcoming you back tomorrow."

Shoppers said crowds at the store had been "horrendous" and raised concerns over a lack of social distancing in response to the notice from Kirkgate.

Non-essential retail shops had been closed since January to try and reduce the spread of Covid-19. In recent days the levels of infection in Bradford has crept up and is now among the highest in Britain.
