THE Bradford district has the worst Covid-19 infection rate in the country, the latest official Government figures reveal.

The data from Public Health England shows how with an rate of 92.4 infections per 100,000 people in the seven days to April 11, Covid-19 is spreading more in Bradford than in any other part of the UK.

Bradford also recorded more cases of Covid-19- 499 - than any other area of the country.

Bradford is ahead of Luton, where the rate is 92, and Corby in Northamptonshire where the rate is 91.4. The district's rate is more than triple the UK average which stands at 28.7.

The district topping the table for infections follows a week of rising case numbers and infection rates, which came after a week in which infections dropped massively.

The rate in Bradford the highest in West Yorkshire by far; Leeds' is 56.9, Wakefield's is 73.8, Kirklees' is 76.2, while Calderdale leads the way on 27.9.

A number of areas in the district are experiencing worryingly high infection rates over the past seven days, driving the district's infection rate up.

Brown Royd has the worst infection rate in the district, at 251.1 infections per 100,000 people, followed by Frizinghall & Heaton Grove on 223.4, and Fairweather Green on 213.9.

Keighley Central & East recorded the most cases in the seven days to April 11 and has a rate of 193.2, while swathes of the south, east and west of Bradford and parts of Keighley all hafve infection rates above 100.

These figures show there is a still a lot of work to do in some parts of the district to reduce infections and the threat of Covid-19.

Some of these areas are also recording some of the lowest uptake of the Covid-19 vaccine in the district, compounding the problem.

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he wants to avoid a fourth national lockdown, but has not ruled out imposing tighter restrictions on certain areas which are lagging behind in bringing infections down and getting out the vaccine.

If Bradford cannot reduce its infection rate there is the real risk the district will have to watch as surrounding areas get more freedoms while it is held back.
