EVERY home in West Yorkshire is being sent a booklet detailing the upcoming election for West Yorkshire Mayor.

It is the first time people from across West Yorkshire's five districts will be asked to vote for the newly created role.

The position is part of the West Yorkshire Devolution Deal announced by Government in March 2020 - a deal that will see decisions on infrastructure, transport and skills spending made locally rather than in Westminster.

The West Yorkshire Mayor will also take on the powers currently held by the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

However, despite the fact the deal could bring major changes - the pedestrianisation of parts of Bradford City Centre and a South Bradford park and ride are some of the schemes that the mayor will likely be deciding upon - public response to the upcoming election has so far been relatively muted.

Executive backs devolution deal - although there are fears it 'went over the head' of many residents

When a public consultation on the proposed devolution was held last year, just 629 people from Bradford responded.

The booklet being sent to every West Yorkshire household with a registered voter is required by law, and includes details of the new mayor's powers and what each candidate's main campaign points will be.

Candidates for West Yorkshire Mayor are

Ali, Waj - Reform UK

Brabin, Tracy - Labour

Buxton, Bob - Yorkshire Party

Cooper, Andrew Vara - Green Party

Golton, Stewart - Liberal Democrats

Hirst, Therese - English Democrats

Robinson, Matt - Conservatives

The elections take place alongside the Bradford Council elections on Thursday May 6.
