BRADFORD is now very close to having 50 per cent of its entire adult population vaccinated against Covid-19, the latest NHS figures reveal.

By April 11, 86.4 per cent of the over 50s population in the district – 161,585 people – had received at least one dose of the vaccine, while in the whole population it stands at 49.6 per cent, a 1.1 per cent rise.

For the over 50s this is up just 1,200 from the previous week, reflecting the national picture as the final push to offer all over 50s the jab took place, with first doses administered falling while second doses being given has risen as more people reach the 12-week point from their first jab.

Yesterday – April 15 – was the Government’s self-set target to offer all over 50s the jab, a target it said was reached a couple of days early, and now the vaccine offer has been opened to people aged 45 and over.

In Bradford, while 86.4 per cent of over 50s have taken up the jab which has been proven to reduce the risk of infection, serious illness and death, it means 13.6 per cent of the people most at risk of being seriously ill or dying from Covid-19 – 25,531 people – have chosen not to get the jab.

The NHS figures also reveal the number of people who have had their second dose of the vaccine, broken down at Clinical Commissioning Group level.

In the Bradford District & Craven CCG area, 261,520 people have now had their first dose, of which 186,499 are aged 50 and over.

The total number of second doses administered stands at 66,275, while for the over 50s it stands at 53,083, meaning for that now 28.5 per cent of over 50s in the CCG area are fully protected from Covid-19.

The Shipley constituency continues to lead the way in the district on vaccinations; more than three out of five adults in the area have now had the jab, with 92.3 per cent of over 50s protected.

It is followed closely by Keighley and then Bradford South, but Bradford East and West both continue to trail behind in the rollout.

The figures for each constituency in the Bradford district are:

  • Bradford East – 27,851 over 50s vaccinated (81.8% of over 50s population), 42,020 total vaccinations (42.2% of total population vaccinated)
  • Bradford South - 32,140 (87.5%), 46,996 (53.2%)
  • Bradford West - 24,277 (77%), 40,067 (37.2%)
  • Keighley - 37,733 (90%), 49,477 (58.1%)
  • Shipley - 39,584 (92.3%), 52,089 (62%)
