A CONSTRUCTION worker had to be taken to hospital yesterday following an incident at a Lidl store.

Work has been ongoing at the supermarket, on Carr House Road, Shelf, since January.

A spokesperson said today: "We can confirm that the emergency services were called to our Shelf store on Wednesday afternoon to assist with an incident involving a construction worker conducting maintenance work.

"The individual was treated on site for his injuries and taken to hospital as a precaution.

"The store has been closed to the public for some time while the essential works are undertaken and our main contractor is currently investigating the cause of the issue."

A spokesperson from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: “HSE is aware of the incident and is making enquiries.”

Earlier this month, a Lidl spokesperson said the store would reopen in the summer following "modernisation works".

They added: "The works will include the delivery of state of the art facilities to improve the overall efficiency of the store, including new heating and insulation as well as larger and more efficient refrigeration units.

"The modernisation will ensure the ability to continue to grow our offering for customers, especially within our fruit and vegetable range and will also allow us to introduce new and exciting products for the local community. The overall customer experience will also be enhanced through an updated car park and signage throughout the store."

Lidl’s Regional Head of Property, Nick Harvey, added: “We would like to thank the local community for their continued patience and understanding while we carry out these works."
