Residents in part of West Yorkshire were advised to keep their windows shut last night (Monday) after an intense fire sent plumes of smoke billowing across their neighbourhood.

The inferno broke out at a building in Dewsbury and a large number of firefighters were scrambled to the scene.

The fire was at a factory building, with the flames and smoke visible from many miles away, including in Wakefield and Huddersfield.

Eight fire engines and two aerial appliances attended the scene. Crews from Bradford, Cleckheaton and Rastrick were among those tackling the blaze.

Nearby residents reported hearing bangs from the building as the flames took hold.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said last night: "Crews are in attendance at a large fire at Bretton Park Way, Saville Town, Dewsbury.

"Due to the amount of smoke, residents in the local area are advised to keep windows and doors shut. Please avoid travelling through this area."

This morning, crews are 'damping down' at the scene after the blaze was brought under control.
