THREE members of Bradford Council's Executive will be defending their seats in next month's local council elections.

The full list of 152 candidates who will be standing to fill 33 spots on the Council was released today.

The election will take place on Thursday May 6.

Among the Councillors looking to retain their seats are three of the Council's six strong Labour Executive - Councillor Alex Ross Shaw (Regeneration, Planning and Transport) who is a candidate for Windhill and Wrose, Adrian Farley (Children and Families) who is standing in Keighley West and Abdul Jabar (Neighbourhoods and Community Safety) and standing in Great Horton.

Each of Bradford's 90 Council seats are up for grabs every four years.

Some Councils operate a system where every position is contested at once - and the Council make up stays the same for four years.

However, like many Councils across the country, Bradford Council has a four year electoral cycle where a a third of Councillors, one in each ward, face re-election a year - with a fourth year of no elections.

This year there is at least one seat in each of the District's 30 wards that will be decided.

In three wards there will be elections for two seats this year - Bingley Rural, due to the death of Councillor Mike Ellis, Keighley Central, following the death of Councillor Abid Hussain just before Christmas and Wharfedale following the announcement that Councillor Jackie Whiteley announced she was standing down.

Labour currently control the Council, holding 50 of the 90 available seats. 46 seats are needed for a majority, meaning even though just 33 seats are up for grabs, this election could tip the balance of power in City Hall.

Labour and the Green Party are standing candidates in every ward, with Conservatives fielding candidates in every ward except Toller and the Liberal Democrats fielding candidates in all wards except Toller and Tong.

Other parties fielding candidates in different wards include The Yorkshire Party, UKIP, Reform UK, the Trade Unionist and Socialist coalition, the Social Democratic Party, The For Britain Movement, Freedom Alliance and British Democrats.

This year's elections will be the first to be held since the start of the Covid 19 pandemic - the 2020 election was cancelled by the Government due to fears that trips to the polling station would spread the virus.

What is a Councillor?

A Councillor is person elected by the residents of a local area - a ward - to represent that area on the local authority.

As well as representing their constituents and raising local issues with Council bosses, they have a vote on issues such as local budgets and setting Council tax. Some are chosen to sit on panels, such as licensing panels or planning committees, to decide what developments can happen in the District.

Others are chosen to sit on scrutiny committees, cross party groups that scrutinise decisions made by the Council's Executive or Council officers.

Councillors do not receive a wage, and many also have full time jobs.

However, Councillors do receive an annual allowance of £13,042.

Councillors with more responsibilities - such as sitting on the Executive or a Council committee, receive additional allowances.
