TRIBUTES from across Bradford are pouring in for the Duke of Edinburgh, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, who died peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

Philip, 99, was the longest-serving consort in British history and the duke and the Queen were married for more than 70 years.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Doreen Lee, on behalf of the district and the council, expressed her sympathy at this time of national mourning.

Flags across our district have been lowered as a mark of respect and a book of condolence has been opened on Bradford Council’s website.

Further arrangements for marking this sad event are being made in accordance with official protocols and more information will be available soon.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Doreen Lee, said: “I am writing to Her Majesty The Queen to express condolences on behalf of the people of the Bradford district.”

Kersten England, Chief Executive of Bradford Council, said: “I am saddened to learn of the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness provided unwavering support to Her Majesty The Queen throughout their life together and he served the country and Commonwealth with great distinction and vigour."

Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, said: “On behalf of Bradford Council and the residents of our district, I wish to express our sorrow on hearing the announcement of the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. My condolences to Her Majesty The Queen."

The Conservatives on Bradford Council have joined in tributes following the death of Prince Philip, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

Councillor Rebecca Poulsen, Leader of the Conservative Group said: "My Conservative Group colleagues and I are saddened to hear of the death of Prince Philip, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and our condolences go to The Queen and her family. 

"His unwavering support for his wife HRH Queen Elizabeth for over 70 years have been a credit to him and he has served our country and the Commonwealth with extraordinary commitment and dedication. Our thoughts go out to his family at this sad time."

Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West, said: "It is truly saddening to hear the passing of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. My thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty The Queen and the whole Royal Family at this incredibly tough time."

Judith Cummins, MP for Bradford South, said: "My thoughts and prayers are with The Queen, her family and the British people who are mourning the loss of Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh dedicated his life to public duties and our country."

Tracy Brabin, MP for Batley and Spen, said: "Very sad news that Prince Philip has passed away. He was a dedicated and enduring public servant, whose commitment to our Armed Forces, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and other social issues will form a lasting legacy. My thoughts are with the Queen and the entire Royal Family."

Emergency services personnel from across West Yorkshire also paid tribute.

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Mark Burns-Williamson OBE said: "I would like to extend my personal condolences to The Queen and the Royal Family at this sad time. My thoughts are with them all.

"In 2015, Prince Philip officially opened up our state of the art regional police training facilities at Carr Gate in Wakefield and he knew more than most what a life dedicated to public service required.

"It was a real pleasure to have met him personally during what I understand was one of his last public engagements in West Yorkshire and his enthusiasm for policing was clear for all to see."

Russ Foster, Deputy Chief Constable for the West Yorkshire Police, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip. We offer our most sincere condolences to the Royal Family and pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh”.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "It is with great sadness that West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority learn of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance said: "It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time and everyone here at Yorkshire Air Ambulance would like to send their condolences."

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Police Federation said: "The thoughts of West Yorkshire Police Federation and the officers we represent are with the Queen and the Royal Family following the death of Prince Philip."

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. There is a sombre mood across the force today as our thoughts and condolences are with HM The Queen and the Royal Family at this very sad time."

David Lascelles, Earl of Harewood, said: "All of us here at Harewood are greatly saddened to hear of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.

"Patron and President of hundreds of organisations, he has championed and raised the profile of so many good causes. Harewood staff, members, our visitors and residents across Leeds will remember with great warmth his visit to Harewood in 2002 on the occasion of The Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

"The flag at Harewood House will fly at half-mast and our deepest sympathies are conveyed to Her Majesty The Queen and the rest of the Royal Family at this sad time."

Mohammed Shafiq, CEO of the Ramadhan Foundation, said: "The Ramadhan Foundation joins the nation and the Commonwealth in marking the death of the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, aged 99. We offer our condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family at this sad time for the nation.

"Prince Philip served with distinction in World War II and over the decades supported dozens of charities which changed lives for the better. It is right and proper that we reflect on his extraordinary lifetime of service; the contribution of Prince Philip’s generation has shaped the world for the better. Across the Commonwealth thousands of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs served alongside others in the World Wars and our communities contribution to the UK has strengthened the nation.

"It is a moment of real sadness for Her Majesty who has lost the love of her life for 73 years, together they have served the nation and today we send our love and support to the Queen."

The Lord-Lietenant of North Yorkshire said: "It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh today, Friday, April 9, 2021.

"His Royal Highness was a hugely charismatic man, who was much loved and respected by so many.

"Prince Philip carried out over 22,000 solo engagements since 1952, including many in North Yorkshire, as well as accompanying Her Majesty The Queen at many other events. They were both at the 150th birthday celebrations of The Great Yorkshire Show in 2008 and in May 2010, they formally re-opened the Scarborough Open Air Theatre to rapturous applause. The Duke was also a great supporter of military events across our region.

“Prince Philip, who has been by The Queen's side for more than 70 years, making him the longest serving consort, dedicated his life to supporting Her Majesty. He has combined loyalty and duty without diminishing his own individual personality. They have had an extraordinary partnership which has lasted over 74 years.

“He will be fondly remembered by so many, both here and across the Commonwealth. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme will be his legacy, touching over six million young adults and continuing under the auspices of HRH The Earl of Wessex."

The Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Dot Foster, said: "We are saddened by the news today of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip has played a significant role in the public life of the nation for over 70 years. We will remember him for his many years of public service, for the support he has given the Queen throughout her reign and for his extensive charitable work.  

“Our thoughts today are with the Queen and the Royal Family.

“As a mark of respect, we are flying the Union flag at half-mast at Halifax Town Hall from today until the day of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral."

Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Mumtaz Hussain, said: “On behalf of the citizens of Kirklees, I would like to send my deepest sympathies to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and family on the loss of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

“The Duke of Edinburgh Awards was established to help young people develop essential life skills and make new friends – a proud legacy he leaves behind that will live on through the generation’s past, present and future.

Cllr Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council, said: "We will be paying our respects in Kirklees by flying our Union flags at half-mast at all of our town halls and we have opened a book of condolence online. I know residents from communities across Kirklees will want to express, and share, their thoughts at this sad moment for our country."
