POLICE have reminded people to "go left" if you break down on the motorway, or ring 999 if you get stuck in the middle.

West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) posted a reminder on social media website, Twitter, of the protocol when breaking down on the motorway.

The post told drivers they should try to go left as far as possible before the vehicle comes to a stop, and onto the hard shoulder, if available.

If you manage to make it to an emergency area, or onto the hard shoulder, you should contact Highways England on: 0300 123 5000.

But, if you become stranded in a live lane, this is an emergency situation.

You should remain in your car, with your seatbelts and hazard lights on, and ring 999 immediately for assistance.

In all situations it is important to stay calm.
