A MAN has made the incredible gesture of allowing a family left devastated by a house fire in Queensbury earlier this week to stay in one of his properties for free.

The fire saw crews from four fire stations in attendance at the scene, where the blaze "fully involved" the kitchen on the lower ground floor of the house.

Ben Hillam has said John and Sue Deakin and their son can move into his former home on the same road, Ford Hill, from the start of April until they get themselves sorted.

Mr Hillam, director at Comcat Group and co-founder of Deliveree, had recently moved and was intending to sell the property, before he was aware of the fire.

Speaking about how the idea came about, he said: “I came up the road and saw smoke billowing out of a house and the fire brigade was there. I was sat at home that night and it came up on Facebook.

"I just thought I have got a house that I am not using, it just needs tidying up, they can use that.

"The community has rallied around her. I am originally from Halifax then I moved up there. They do all stick together, it is nice to see."

This has been evident in the £3882 raised, at time of writing, for the family who lost pets during the fire.
