AN INQUEST into the death of a 17-year-old Bradford girl who died following a road traffic incident in 2019 has been suspended for further police inquiries.

Ishah Iman Riaz, a sixth form pupil at Beckfoot School, died on December 12 shortly after the collision which took place on Bradford Road in Bingley at around 4pm.

A brief hearing took place on Wednesday morning at Bradford Coroner’s Court. Assistant Coroner Katy Dickinson agreed to extend the suspension of her investigations into Ishah’s death, by a further eight weeks so that police inquiries can continue.

An inquest would then normally be held upon the completion of the police investigation.

A month after her death, her relatives paid a heartfelt tribute and spoke of the great void her death had left.

“She had a genuine, pure, heart,” they said. “She was really witty, she was funny, she was really entertaining.”

The youngest of six, her mum Taiba, described her as her “precious gift from God”.

They said she had high ambitions for the future and was studying chemistry, biology and history as her A-level subjects. Just a few days after her death, her family received a letter from the University of Leeds saying she had been accepted on a special programme.

Speaking of the devastation felt by the family, they said: “We are coming to the realisation, this lifetime, we won’t be seeing her again. It has left a void in our heart - it’s like a piece of us has gone.”

At the time of her death Beckfoot School paid tribute to Ishah describing her as a “wonderful young lady” who had joined the school only three months earlier to study for her A-levels.

They said: “She made such an impression on all who knew her and we are heartbroken by this news. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with her family and friends at this terribly sad time.”

Ishah, who lived at Haslingdon Drive, Bradford, had joined Beckfoot sixth form from Belle Vue Girls’ Academy.

A spokesman for Belle Vue said at the time: “Ishah was a model student, involving herself in all aspects of school life. She was a very gifted young woman with so many talents, and so much to give.

“She was a brilliant musician who enjoyed playing the piano, performing with so many other students and building great friendships. She always took any opportunity to develop herself and really enjoyed being part of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.”

At the time police appealed for witnesses following the fatal road traffic collision. They said it involved a green Skoda Octavia travelling along the B6265 Bradford Road towards Bingley.

The driver, a 65-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later released under investigation.

The police have confirmed that their inquiries are continuing.

Following a second serious road traffic incident involving pedestrians on the same stretch of Bradford Road, there were calls for improved safety measures.

A local councillor and a local resident both called for urgent action, with the councillor saying: "We have a desperate need for speed calming measures."
