A MUCH-loved father and son tragically died in a crash while on holiday in Turkey, an inquest heard.

Abdul Kabir Farid, 41, and his son, 14-year-old Mohammed Raees Kabir-Farid, known as Raees, from Shipley, were killed in a crash with a minibus in Serik, Antalya, on December 3, 2019.

Their untimely deaths prompted a huge outpouring of grief among those who knew them, with thousands of people gathering in the Bradford Grand Mosque to pay their respects at their funeral.

An inquest into their deaths, held virtually at Bradford Coroners’ Court yesterday, heard the family, who had a villa in Turkey, were on holiday when tragedy struck.

Mr Farid, a taxi driver, and his son had gone to the gym, while his wife, Sarah Brewer, took their daughters shopping, but the alarm was then raised by a family friend that there had been an accident and she needed to go to the hospital, where she received the devastating news that both her husband and son had died.

The inquest heard Mr Farid died in hospital despite medics’ efforts, while Raees passed away at the scene and a pathologist concluded that both died of multiple injuries. Evidence outlined that Mr Farid had lost the ability to control the steering of the car and was in collision with a minibus.

Senior coroner Martin Fleming said there was no evidence that the car, or road surface, contributed to this and it remained unclear why Mr Farid momentarily lost control, but tragically, it was under circumstances which prevented either him or the oncoming driver, from taking evasive action.

He said Mr Farid tested negative for both alcohol and drugs of any kind and they did not play any part.

Mr Fleming ruled the father and son died as a result of a road traffic collision. The inquest heard Omer Soylemez, public prosecutor in Turkey, recommended no further action against the driver of the minibus.

In a statement read out in the hearing, Mrs Brewer described her husband as a “very loving person” who enjoyed spending time with his family and was passionate about his religion. She said people would always go to him for advice. The court heard he “doted” on his family.

She described Raees, who attended Beckfoot School in Bingley as a “perfect child”, who loved football and boxing, and that he might have gone on to have a career in football.

Mrs Brewer spoke of how much she missed them and how their deaths had been a huge loss, both to the family and community.

In the days following the sad news, Beckfoot School described Raees, a young man who the inquest heard had “so much promise”, as a “remarkable young man who was hugely popular and made a great impression on our school community and everyone who knew him”.

Mr Farid was said to be a man “who not only served his family, but also served his community at large”.
