SHIPLEY MP Philip Davies has heavily criticised the Labour Party for its "repulsive" condemnation of police at the Sarah Everard vigil in London on Saturday.

The Metropolitan Police have been widely criticised for their handling of the protest in Clapham on Saturday evening, where protesters were forcibly removed after police judged the event was in breach of Covid-19 regulations.

Mr Davies, who has held the Shipley seat for the Conservatives since 2005, said it is "disgusting" that the police are being criticised by Labour for enforcing regulations which Labour MPs voted for in the House of Commons.

He was speaking to the Telegraph & Argus as today's debate on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill was going on in Parliament, which has drawn some criticism for potentially restricting future protests.

Mr Davies said: "Let's be clear this Bill would not have made that vigil illegal on Saturday night; that event would have been fine.

"What it fell foul of was the lockdown rules, which I voted against.

"What I find disgusting, and to be honest utterly repulsive, is Labour MPs who supported the lockdown laws and voted for them, to then complain about the police enforcing the law they passed.

"I find it disgusting they can implement these laws and then complain about them being enforced.

"People should of course have the right to protest peacefully, and I do not think this Bill seeks to stop that."
