AN event last night in Shipley in memory of Sarah Everard whose body was found in Kent on Friday, prompted message of support and compassion, organisers have said.
The Shipley Feminist Zealots and women in Ilkley had planned a socially-distanced vigil in Shipley to coincide with an event in London. However, it was moved online for fear it was be seen as a breach of Covid restrictions.
Online viewers were able to watch Shipley Feminist Zealots group member Sarah Cartin and Shipley Councillor Vick Jenkins read out more than 120 names of women who had 'died as a consequence of male violence in the past year in the UK'. There were some children's names read too.
"It went very peacefully and was very dignified and very emotional, said Sarah, adding: "There was a police presence but there was only a handful of people there who had come to put tributes and flowers on the gates at Northcliffe Park at the time the vigil started. They stayed to watch but made sure they were not in breach of rules.
"We received some lovely messages online afterwards. Some were from people who shared their own experiences.
"It has been a very emotional week with International Women's Day at the start of it and ending today with Mother's Day."
