BRADFORD has ranked low in a new list of the best places around the UK to retire to, scoring poorly for outdoor and leisure facilities for the elderly.

In the study, it looked at all the different factors which contribute to a happy and healthy retirement, with Bradford ranking 21st out of 30 on the list.

The research, by Consultus Care, looked at four key areas to produce the list determining the most and least elderly-friendly locations around the UK.

These included; liveability factors (climate, crime, elderly population, house and care home prices), health and fitness opportunities (quality of health care, availability of leisure centres, golf courses, hiking routes and proximity to the seaside), entertainment (number of cinemas, pubs, cafés and restaurants, bingo halls and garden centres), and amenities (number of parks, libraries, supermarkets).

Bradford scored worst on health and fitness and entertainment, but also didn't do great in the other areas. From a maximum score of 570, the district was rated 263.

The best place to retire to in the UK, according to the study, is Sunderland, where cheap housing and proximity to the sea have played into the city's hands to give it a score of 409.

The top five is dominated by coastal locations, with Bournemouth second, Newcastle fourth and Liverpool fifth. The only inland city in the top five was Derby.

Bottom of the list, and unsurprisingly due to its extortionate property prices, lack of any countryside and crime rates, was London, scoring just 80 on the index. Other areas in the bottom five are Birmingham, Coventry, Leeds and Brighton, with London and Birmingham performing exceptionally worse than anywhere else.
