Speaking on Good Morning Britain today, Dr Khan says it will be incredibly difficult to clear the backlog.
He said: “This is one of the tragedies of this pandemic, the effects on other illnesses Covid has had.

“Those statistics are stark, behind statistics are individual people that might be in pain affecting their daily living.
“I had to do a referral yesterday for a patient and had to give them a clear warning they may have to wait a year or more for their treatment. It’s tough.
“To try to clear this backlog will be incredibly difficult. It is going to need time, investment. NHS are exhausted; mental health issues on what they’ve seen throughout this pandemic.
“A lot of work to be done. It’s affected the NHS across the board.”
