POLICE seized a car from a disqualified driver who had travelled with his partner from Manchester to Hull for his birthday.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) caught the couple breaching Covid-19 regulations at Hartshead Services, off the M62.

They were on their way back from a 200-mile round trip to Hull from Manchester.

The couple told police they had been for a "day trip" to the coastal city because it was the driver's birthday.

But the current rules stipulate that people should only be making "essential journeys" and not beyond their locality for exercise.

The driver's birthday was also made worse and came to "an abrupt end", after the officers conducted checks on the couple and black Volkswagen Passat they were driving.

It turned out the driver was in fact disqualified.

Police seized the vehicle and reported the man, as a result.

Both individuals were also reported for breaking Covid-19 regulations.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "A couple had been for a day trip to Hull from Manchester as it was the driver’s birthday.

"His birthday day trip came to an abrupt end as he was a disqualified driver.

"Vehicle seized, driver reported and both reported for breaching Covid regs."
