LATEST NEWS: Road closed this week while sinkhole and sewer is repaired
A GAPING hole in the middle of a Bradford street is still open today, with the road blocked.
The crevice - a three-metre deep sinkhole - was discovered yesterday in Church Street, off Heaton Road in Manningham.
Water was gushing ferociously below it and a police cordon was put in place initially - between the junctions with Rose Street and Lily Street - to protect motorists and passers-by.
This was replaced in the afternoon by construction barriers and tape, packed tightly around the sinkhole.
Engineers from Yorkshire Water arrived at the scene to try solve the situation and the utility company revealed later yesterday that the collapse of the road was caused by a damaged sewer.
The last update - yesterday at 3.33pm - was that the team on site were repairing the sewer, with traffic management in place while this was underway.
But the sinkhole remains open today, with the roadwork barriers still surrounding it.
Large metal fencing has also been erected around the barriers, to prevent anyone getting too close.
This means Church Street is still blocked.
The T&A has asked Yorkshire Water for an update on the situation.
