THE latest crime data for Bradford has uncovered the district’s most crime-ridden streets, most common offences and the outcomes of crimes reported to police.

The figures are a round up of crimes in January 2021, and show that in total more than 5,800 crimes were reported to West Yorkshire Police in that month, more than 188 crimes a day.

This figure of 5,832 is down by almost 900 compared with January 2020, which police have said is credit to the “tireless work” of officers.

The data reveals that of these offences, 2,385 are classified as violent or sexual offences, the most common type of offending in the district.

This is followed by anti-social behaviour, of which there were 919 reported offences, followed by 540 public order offences, 522 criminal damage and arson incidents, and 296 burglaries.

There were 244 instances of vehicle crime, 236 drugs-related offences, 37 robberies and 26 thefts from the person - muggings.

The most common areas and worst affected streets are also listed in the police data, with supermarkets the most common settings for crime, at 136.

Sports and recreation areas such as playing fields and parks were next with 77 offences, followed by pedestrian subways with 67 crimes and petrol stations with 63.

The most crime ridden street in the district in January was Adelaide Street in the city centre, and directly opposite Trafalgar House police station. A total of 50 crimes were recorded there.

These were made up of mainly violent or sexual offences, followed by drugs offences and public order, but also included possession of weapons.

Idlethorp Way in Thorpe Edge was the next street on the list with 29 offences, more than half of which were anti-social behaviour but also included violence and weapons possession.

Lower Wyke Green in Wyke was the third most crime-ridden street with 22 offences, 16 of which were violent or sexual offences.

Almost 45 per cent of all crimes - 2,612 - have resulted in no action being taken, with 1,415 due to police being unable to identify a suspect, and in 1,163 were unable to prosecute a suspect, while in 34 proceeding was not deemed to be in the public interest.

Eight offenders have been cautioned, 81 local resolutions were handed out and 99 offences are currently in the court system awaiting a result, and 2,104 offences remain under investigation with police.

Bradford District Commander Chief Superintendent Daniel Greenwood, said: “Every colleague within Bradford District – whether police officer, police staff or a volunteer - works tirelessly to reduce crime, reassure the public and protect vulnerable victims.

“I am immensely proud of that work.

“We also work closely with other statutory partners, voluntary groups and community organisations to make sure that together we make the maximum impact for the communities we serve.

“Overall in West Yorkshire crime continues to fall – with an 8.8 per cent reduction in offences and 25,840 fewer victims in the 12 months to September 2020 compared to the same period the previous year.

“I would like to reassure the public that West Yorkshire Police was independently assessed by HMICFRS as ‘Outstanding’ for the way it records crime. I am therefore confident that the figures reflect a genuine reduction in crime levels.”
