A persistent burglar has been jailed for more than six years after raiding high-value jewellery, cash and a car in three house break-ins.

Shane Scott targeted homes in Halifax and Blackpool and assaulted the two police officers who went to arrest him, Bradford Crown Court heard today.

Scott, 44, of Mixenden Court, Mixenden, Halifax, was sentenced on a video link to Leeds Prison where he was remanded in custody.

Prosecutor Richard Holland said Scott’s 17 previous convictions for 54 offences included house burglary, robbery and drugs offences.

On May 16 last year, he burgled an occupied house in Athol Green, Ovenden, Halifax, overnight, stealing property including a purse, bank cards, cash, a camera and the householder’s Kia Sportage car.

The same night he entered a house in Bath Place with intent to steal, Mr Holland said.

Between August 5 and 7, Scott broke into an unoccupied house in Warbreck Drive, Blackpool, and stole jewellery including an engagement ring, a wedding ring, a diamond necklace, and £200 in cash.

When two police officers went to arrest him on May 19, he assaulted them, pushing a female officer over, and having to be Pava sprayed to subdue him.

Scott pleaded guilty to three offences of house burglary, stealing the Kia and two offences of assaulting police officers as emergency workers.

His solicitor advocate, Saf Salam, said he had suffered the tragic loss of many friends and relatives and had post-traumatic stress disorder.

Scott’s mental health problems had made being in prison on remand during the Covid-19 lockdown especially difficult.

Judge Jonathan Rose said the Athol Green burglary was at night when the woman householder was asleep upstairs.

Scott didn’t give a thought to the distress caused when he raided the property.

While on bail he went on to break into the address in Blackpool. The householder was not at home when he got away with high value jewellery that was probably of sentimental value as well.

Scott had showed no remorse for any of the offences he had committed, the judge said.

He was jailed for a total of 81 months.
